Marine Paint Selection Guide

Marine coatings are selected for the hull, deck and coastal or offshore structures according to their operating conditions. Start with the vessel type, area of application, substrate and condition of the existing coating. One product should not be assumed suitable for every part of a ship.

Choose by area of service

Above-waterline surfaces face weather, sunlight and appearance requirements. Submerged areas need a protective underwater system and an antifouling finish compatible with the approved underlying coats. Decks require consideration of traffic, abrasion and surface safety. Explore ship deck coatings, below-waterline coatings and the antifouling product for the relevant application.

Chemical cargo tanks, ballast tanks and freshwater tanks have different requirements. Identify the stored liquid, service temperature, cleaning method and any required approvals. An epoxy product name alone does not establish suitability for drinking-water contact; documentation for the exact product and intended use must be checked. Heat-resistant coatings likewise depend on the actual continuous or intermittent operating temperature.

Confirm the coating system

A marine system commonly includes a primer, an intermediate coat and a finish selected for the exposure. Confirm each layer’s role, compatibility and specified dry film thickness in the technical documents. Do not infer an approved system simply from the resin family or from products appearing together in a catalogue.

For repairs, identify the previous coating, corrosion condition and achievable surface preparation. If the existing material is unknown, technical assessment and a compatibility test may be needed before full application. Sea-stock maintenance products also need to match the vessel’s maintenance conditions.

Application and quantity

Use the exact product data sheet for substrate and ambient temperature, humidity, mixing, pot life, thinning and recoating intervals. Values vary between products. Paint quantity depends on area, volume solids, dry film thickness and application losses; theoretical coverage alone does not determine the purchase quantity.

Request a project-specific proposal

Provide the application area, approximate surface area, substrate, operating environment, previous coating and time available before service. Include surface photographs and existing data sheets where available. Confirm the product code, current technical documentation and application conditions before ordering or starting work.
