Computerised Paint Tinting: Process and Shade Control

Quick answer: Computerised paint tinting adds measured quantities of compatible colorants to a base paint using a stored formula. The dispenser measures the materials; the mixer makes the mixture uniform.

Base paint and colorants

A base paint is designed for tinting within a particular system. Select the base specified by the formula; bases are not all white or interchangeable. A colorant contains concentrated pigment and a carrier and must be compatible with the selected base.

The Elementis technical guide identifies base–colorant compatibility as an important factor in uniform colour acceptance. Do not add an arbitrary colorant to a coating.

Steps in computerised paint tinting

  1. Select the product, base, can volume and shade code.
  2. Retrieve an approved formula for that tinting system.
  3. Dispense the specified colorant quantities using equipment maintained and prepared to its manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Mix with suitable equipment according to the product and equipment instructions.
  5. Prepare and assess a dry sample before wider application.

Formula quantities depend on the base and pack size. The COROB software manual also considers base settings and can fill level in its calculations. This overview does not replace the equipment operating instructions.

Benefits and limits

Repeatability and order records

Recording the product, base, shade code and formula helps with repeat orders. Computerised dispensing does not remove every source of error or guarantee that different batches match.

Available shades

The achievable range depends on the product, bases, colorants and approved formulas. A tinting machine cannot produce every possible shade in every coating.

Checks before ordering

  • Record the shade code together with the system and product name.
  • Assess a physical dry sample under suitable lighting; a screen is not final shade approval.
  • For repairs, consider ageing, gloss and service-related changes in the existing coating.
  • For two-component coatings, tinting does not replace adding the hardener at the ratio and conditions specified in the data sheet.
